Ukrainian and European officials are vehemently denying Moscow's accusations that they targeted the Russian President's home with a drone strike. This incident has the potential to derail U.S.-led peace negotiations as we head into the new year.

However, by Wednesday, Trump's stance appeared to shift, as he shared a New York Post editorial that accused Russia of obstructing peace in Ukraine. A source revealed that Trump's change of heart came after a briefing from CIA Director John Ratcliffe, although details of the briefing were not disclosed.
Ukraine's Response: A False Flag Operation?
Ukraine has vehemently denied any involvement in the alleged attack, branding it a Russian disinformation campaign. Kyiv alleges that the goal is to drive a wedge between itself and Washington, particularly after a recent meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, which both sides described as positive. In a detailed briefing paper distributed to European Union delegations, Ukraine claims the Russian allegations are intended to "sabotage" agreements made during the meeting.
Adding to the skepticism, Kaja Kallas, the EU's top diplomat, dismissed Russia's claims as a "deliberate distraction." She emphasized that no one should accept the unsubstantiated claims from the aggressor. As of Wednesday, there was no independent verification of the attack. However, the situation highlights how both sides are trying to influence Trump's perception of the war, which is now nearly four years old.
Conflicting Narratives and Unanswered Questions
Kurt Volker, a former U.S. ambassador to NATO, stated that there's no evidence that Putin seeks peace and wants Ukraine to be successful, as Trump asserted after speaking to the Russian leader. The Russian and Ukrainian embassies in Washington have not commented on the matter. The White House has also remained silent.
Russia's Counter-Narrative
Russia's defense ministry released video footage showing a senior officer detailing how Moscow believes Ukraine attacked Putin's Novgorod residence. The video included fragments of a downed Ukrainian drone carrying an explosive device. However, Ukraine's foreign ministry dismissed the footage, stating that no attack took place.
A History of Skepticism and Conflicting Information
Before Lavrov's accusation, Novgorod Governor Alexander Dronov stated that air defense and fighter jets had shot down Ukrainian drones. Trump, who has expressed skepticism about the attack, has at times appeared willing to accept controversial statements by Putin at face value. Earlier this year, Trump repeated Putin's assertions that Russian forces had encircled Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region, even though U.S. intelligence indicated this was not true.

The debate over the alleged Ukrainian attack comes as some Western intelligence officials have quietly argued Russia has sought to delay additional punitive moves by Washington designed to force Moscow into a peace deal. In the Ukrainian briefing paper, Kyiv noted that various Russian officials made extremely similar comments in public shortly after the alleged attack, suggesting pre-coordination. The paper also noted that residents of a town near Putin's Novgorod residence reported not hearing any air defenses on the night of the alleged attack.
Inconsistencies in Russian Statements
The Russian defense ministry published inconsistent accounts of the alleged Ukrainian drone attacks. In one statement, the ministry said 89 long-range Ukrainian attack drones were intercepted around the country. In a second statement, the ministry said its air defenses had intercepted 91 drones, all bound for Putin's residence.
