Nigeria's political landscape is at a critical juncture, with former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal sounding the alarm about a potential shift towards a one-party state. In a fiery speech, Tambuwal accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of systematically undermining the country's democratic foundations and warned of a dangerous drift away from the multiparty system.
One of the most concerning aspects, according to Tambuwal, is the alleged infiltration and weakening of opposition parties by the APC. He claims that the ruling party has infected and influenced major opposition forces, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Labour Party, and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), creating a push for a sole candidate endorsement, which he argues is undemocratic.
"This is a clear attempt to consolidate power and eliminate any real competition," Tambuwal stated. "It's a worrying trend that threatens the very essence of democracy and pluralism in Nigeria."
Tambuwal's speech also highlighted the role of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a potential savior of Nigeria's political balance. He described the ADC as an emerging force, gaining traction nationwide, with Sokoto at the forefront of its expansion.
"Sokoto is the heart of the ADC's growth," he said. "From here, we will continue to build a strong and united party that can offer a real alternative to the current political dynamics."
The former governor further accused the federal government of failing to address critical issues such as insecurity, economic instability, and unemployment. He painted a bleak picture of rising insecurity, deepening poverty, and increasing unemployment, stating that the government has let the people down.
"The government's priorities seem misaligned," Tambuwal commented. "Instead of focusing on the well-being of its citizens, it appears more interested in maintaining power and influencing elections."
Tambuwal's speech also touched on the alleged manipulation of democratic institutions by the ruling party. He accused the administration of attempting to muzzle the opposition and influence key institutions, including the judiciary, a move he described as undemocratic and a threat to the country's stability.
