A shocking crime spree in Mildura has led to the arrest of six teenagers, leaving the community reeling. This week, the town was shaken by a series of alleged offenses, prompting a swift police response. Let's delve into the details of this unsettling situation.
On January 17, 2026, authorities reported that the alleged incidents began with a failed attempt to enter a home on Ellswood Crescent around 3:00 AM on Thursday. The intruders were reportedly scared off by a resident. The next night, the teens targeted a residence on Beasy Court, trying to force their way in through both the front door and a window. Fortunately, the occupants were awakened, and the would-be burglars fled once more.
But here's where it gets controversial... the group allegedly didn't give up. Police claim the teens successfully broke into a unit on Walnut Avenue shortly after, making off with three sets of car keys, a wallet, and a significant sum of cash – $1,000 to be exact. They then allegedly stole a $130,000 Dodge RAM from the property, using it to continue their alleged spree.
Detectives, after tracking down the suspects, believe they were involved in other break-ins that night. The aftermath has led to legal proceedings for the young individuals involved. A 13-year-old and a 15-year-old boy, both from Mildura, were granted bail and are scheduled to appear in court at a later date. Another 13-year-old and a 15-year-old boy from the same area will face the children's court this evening. A 19-year-old man was also charged and will appear before the Mildura Magistrates’ Court on May 12. A 15-year-old girl was cautioned for her involvement in the car theft but was released without charges.
The Allan government's response: The government has been toughening sentences and bail laws for youth offenders in response to rising crime rates and gang violence. This is a point of contention, as some argue that stricter measures are necessary to deter crime, while others believe in the importance of rehabilitation and support for young offenders. Experts have also been calling for increased youth and family support services across the state.
What do you think? Do you believe the government's approach is the right one, or should there be more focus on rehabilitation? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
