The tragic loss of Matthew Perry has left a void in the hearts of millions, but the pain is especially raw for his family, who are now seeking justice in the wake of his untimely death.
In a heartbreaking turn of events, the parents of the beloved 'Friends' star, Matthew Perry, have voiced their anguish and demand for a severe sentence for Dr. Salvador Plasencia. Plasencia is the doctor who supplied Perry with ketamine, a drug that ultimately contributed to his fatal overdose. Perry's parents, John and Debbie, expressed their devastation, mourning the loss of their 'next patriarch' and holding Plasencia accountable for his actions. But here's where it gets controversial: Perry's mother and stepfather didn't mince words, calling Plasencia a 'jackal' who betrayed his Hippocratic oath.
Plasencia, having pleaded guilty to four counts of distributing ketamine, now faces sentencing. The charges carry a maximum penalty of 40 years in prison, although prosecutors have requested a three-year sentence. The victim impact statements, filed before the sentencing, paint a vivid picture of the family's suffering.
Plasencia is just one of five individuals charged in a federal investigation examining how Perry, 54, obtained ketamine through an underground drug network in Hollywood. All five have since pleaded guilty. Perry, known for his iconic role as Chandler Bing, was found dead in his hot tub in October 2023, after battling depression and addiction for years.
"Matthew's recovery counted on you saying NO," his father and stepmother wrote, questioning Plasencia's motives. His mother and stepfather highlighted text messages where Plasencia allegedly referred to Perry with disrespect, raising serious ethical concerns. "Sometimes it's a little easier to understand when a person commits a terrible crime. Maybe in the heat of passion, or because that person makes one very bad decision," they wrote. "But…a doctor? Who trades on respect, and trust?"
They poignantly shared that Matthew was planning a comeback, hoping for a 'third act' in his life. "He wanted, needed, deserved..a third act. It was ..in the planning. And then, those jackals."
Ketamine, a drug with hallucinogenic effects, is meant to be administered only by a physician. The investigation revealed that Perry was initially taking legal, prescribed amounts of the drug to treat his depression, but he then sought more than prescribed. Court documents show that this led him to multiple doctors and a woman prosecutors called the "Ketamine Queen," who supplied vast amounts of the drug from her Los Angeles home. Prosecutors allege that Plasencia injected Perry with ketamine at his home and in a parking lot. He even taught Perry's assistant how to administer the drug and sold additional vials. Between September 30 and October 12, 2023, Plasencia sold twenty 5ml (100mg/ml) vials of ketamine, ketamine lozenges, and syringes to Perry and his assistant. Prosecutors claim that Plasencia and others exploited Perry's addiction for their own gain.
