Even in the face of triumph, self-criticism can be a powerful force. Marco Bezzecchi, despite spearheading Aprilia's most successful MotoGP season ever, offered a surprisingly modest self-assessment, rating his performance a mere "six and a half, maybe seven" out of ten. This self-evaluation comes after a stellar year where he achieved remarkable feats.
Bezzecchi's achievements are undeniable: he secured three Grand Prix victories, added three sprint race wins, celebrated 15 podium finishes, and ultimately clinched third place in the world championship standings. This performance not only highlighted his individual skill but also elevated Aprilia, marking the highest ranking ever achieved by an Aprilia rider in the MotoGP. Moreover, with teammate Jorge Martin facing injury setbacks, Bezzecchi played a pivotal role in propelling Aprilia to the runner-up position in the constructors' standings, just behind Ducati.
But here's where it gets interesting: rather than basking in the glory of his accomplishments, Bezzecchi focused on the areas where he felt he could have done better. He pinpointed the initial part of the season as a key area for improvement, where he felt valuable points were lost. His first podium finish and victory on the RS-GP didn't come until the seventh race at Silverstone.
"I'd give myself a six and a half or seven out of 10," Bezzecchi shared with SkySport.it during the 100km of Champions dirt track event at Valentino Rossi’s ranch. He elaborated, stating, "In the first part of the season, we still had to get our bearings and were a bit lacking in results. It's true that we've improved, but we need to work hard to get off to a good start." He was quick to praise his team, however, stating, "The guys on the team deserve a 10/10; they were the real champions."
And this is the part most people miss: Bezzecchi's remarkable consistency in the latter half of the season is a testament to his resilience and adaptability. He accumulated more points than any other rider during this period, which propelled him from sixth to third in the final rankings. This mirrored his 2023 performance with VR46 Ducati.
