Denver Barkey Scores 1st NHL Goal! Flyers vs Oilers Highlights (Jan 4, 2026) (2026)

In a thrilling match that highlighted the skills of emerging talent, Denver Barkey celebrated his inaugural NHL goal as the Philadelphia Flyers triumphed over the Edmonton Oilers with a score of 5-2 at Rogers Place on Saturday.

Owen Tippett and Nick Seeler were instrumental for the Flyers, each contributing one goal and one assist, while Bobby Brink and Travis Sanheim also found the net for Philadelphia. This victory brought the Flyers' record to 21 wins, 12 losses, and 7 overtime losses, marking the end of their five-game road trip with a solid 3-2-0 performance. Goaltender Dan Vladar was noteworthy as he made 22 saves throughout the game.

"It's challenging to enter a matchup against a team like this expecting to play an up-and-down game," Vladar remarked. "Every player stepped up and played responsibly, and we simply outworked them. We understood that strong defensive play would lead to scoring opportunities, and we capitalized on those chances. I appreciate my teammates; they made my job easier."

In a highlight for the Oilers, superstar Connor McDavid extended his impressive point streak to 15 games, finishing the night with a goal and an assist. During this streak, he has amassed 36 points, showcasing his extraordinary talent once again. This marks the sixth time in his career that McDavid has enjoyed a point streak of such length. Flyers’ coach Rick Tocchet acknowledged McDavid's impact, stating, "Connor is incredibly difficult to defend against; he will always find his chances. It takes a concerted effort from our entire team to contain him, and Sean Couturier was exceptional in that regard."

For the Oilers, Evan Bouchard also scored a goal, while Calvin Pickard blocked 24 shots in a game that saw Edmonton lose three of its last four since returning from the holiday break. Adam Henrique, a forward for the Oilers, shared his thoughts on the team's inconsistency: "There have been good moments and bad moments. We need to discover a way to consistently perform at our best for the full 60 minutes. There are times when we excel, but then we experience dips, which feels like a roller coaster ride."

Barkey opened the scoring for the Flyers at 7:16 of the first period when he received a pass from Tippett in the slot and skillfully lifted the puck over Pickard's shoulder. Barkey, who was drafted by the Flyers in the third round (95th overall) of the 2023 NHL Draft, reflected on his goal: "Coots made an incredible play in the neutral zone to draw the defense in and passed to Tipper. We executed a 2-on-1 effectively, and Tipper delivered a perfect pass; all I had to do was redirect it towards the net. I was fortunate to finish off a great play from those guys."

Sanheim doubled the Flyers' lead to 2-0 at 10:31 after Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse attempted to clear a rebound. Couturier kept the puck in the offensive zone and fired two shots on goal before Sanheim netted a shot from the right face-off circle.

"Aside from my turnover in the first period, I believe we played quite well against them. The whole team understood we were up against two of the best players in the world—McDavid and Leon Draisaitl—and we needed to be smart on the ice," Sanheim commented. "For the most part, we did that, which contributed to our success."

Brink further increased the Flyers' advantage to 3-0 at 14:38. Bouchard aimed a pass out of his zone toward Zach Hyman, but Brink intercepted it, leading to an odd-man rush. Cam York ultimately banked a shot off Brink from the slot.

The Oilers finally got on the scoreboard when McDavid scored at 16:08, converting a breakaway with a wrist shot after intercepting a pass from York. Bouchard narrowed the deficit to 3-2 on the power play at 9:54 in the second period, connecting with a one-timer slap shot from the top of the right circle after receiving a cross-ice pass from McDavid.

Edmonton's coach Kris Knoblauch noted, "We didn't start the game with enough intensity. After falling behind 3-0, we responded well to finish the first period, but it's tough to come back from such a deficit."

Seeler, who ended an 83-game goal drought, pushed the Flyers' lead to 4-2 at 9:09 in the third period with a wrist shot from above the left circle through traffic. "Scoring that goal felt fantastic, and going home with a win is huge for our confidence," Seeler expressed.

Tippett secured the final score at 5-2 with an empty-net goal with just 1:10 left in the game.

Noteworthy details include that only Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux have had more 15-game point streaks than McDavid. Seeler's previous goal was more than a year ago, dated December 31, 2024. Sanheim's point total now ranks fourth among Flyers defensemen all-time with 231 points. Additionally, the team that has scored first has won the last 19 games for the Oilers. Forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins recorded an assist, making him just one shy of achieving 500 assists in his NHL career, while Hyman saw his six-game point streak come to an end.
