The Toronto Blue Jays are facing a significant transition after parting ways with Bo Bichette, leaving fans to wonder if Cody Bellinger might be the ideal replacement.
After missing out on high-profile targets like Kyle Tucker and Bo Bichette, who both signed short-term contracts with the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets respectively, the Blue Jays are still eager to secure a powerful hitter for their roster. With these moves catching Toronto off guard, there’s a growing anticipation among fans about the possibility of Bellinger joining their lineup.
While the Blue Jays hope to find a suitable successor for Bichette in the future, the immediate need for a strong bat remains unaddressed. Recent updates regarding Bellinger's contract negotiations have sparked excitement among Blue Jays supporters, especially since his agent may be waiting for Toronto to make a competitive offer.
Interestingly, reports indicate that the New York Yankees are remaining firm on their proposition to Bellinger and aren’t planning to increase their offer. Analyst Bill Madden shared insights on social media stating, "The Yankees are unfazed by the Dodgers’ signing of Tucker and are sticking to their five-year deal worth $155-160 million. They are not looking to enter into a bidding war; their stance is solid."
This steadfast approach from the Yankees opens the door for the Blue Jays to step in. Given that they previously extended a 10-year offer to Tucker, it seems reasonable for them to consider presenting Bellinger with a seven-year contract, which could align more closely with what he seeks.
Madden also mentioned that Scott Boras, Bellinger's agent, is on the lookout for "one dumb owner" to potentially surpass the Yankees’ offer in terms of both contract length and average annual value (AAV). He conveyed, "Boras hopes to find someone willing to top the current offer; however, if that doesn’t happen, the Yankees are ready to walk away. They believe that their five-year offer, averaging between $31 million and $32 million per year, presents a fair valuation for the talented 30-year-old."
To put this into perspective, if the Yankees' offer totals $155 million over five years—averaging around $31 million annually—the Blue Jays could feasibly propose a more enticing deal of $32 million per year for seven years, amounting to an impressive total of $224 million.
In comparing Bellinger and Tucker, a former MLB general manager described Bellinger as "Kyle Tucker light." However, the statistics tell a different story. Last season, Tucker recorded 22 home runs, 73 RBIs, and 133 hits, alongside 25 stolen bases and a .266 batting average. In contrast, Bellinger achieved 29 home runs, 98 RBIs, and 160 hits, while also stealing 13 bases with a .272 batting average. This highlights Bellinger’s superior performance despite Tucker's impressive speed.
Over the last four seasons, Bellinger has participated in 556 games, accumulating 92 home runs, 341 RBIs, and 56 stolen bases. Meanwhile, Tucker has played slightly less, participating in 521 games and hitting 104 home runs, achieving the same number of RBIs, and boasting an impressive tally of 91 stolen bases. Although Tucker's numbers showcase his capabilities, Bellinger stood out in overall offensive contribution during the recent season.
As for the loss of Bo Bichette, it may ultimately be beneficial for the Blue Jays. Despite signing several international free-agent shortstops, they won’t find an immediate replacement for Bichette’s talent. His recent contract with the Mets is valued at $126 million and includes opt-out clauses after the first two years. If Bichette excels in the coming season, he could emerge as a highly sought-after free agent, presenting the Blue Jays with a chance to welcome back a familiar face in the future.
While losing Bichette is undoubtedly a setback, it opens up potential opportunities down the line. With Tucker now off the market, pursuing Bellinger appears to be the next logical strategy. Offering him a seven-year contract sounds reasonable, but matching Tucker’s AAV could be risky. After all, if Bichette decides to opt out, the Blue Jays might just find themselves in a position to reclaim one of their homegrown stars at the peak of his career.
