A thrilling 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the Barclays Women's Super League on Saturday was secured by a stunning goal from Olivia Smith and a late winner from Stina Blackstenius. Here's a detailed match report, offering a comprehensive breakdown of the game's key moments and player performances.
FIRST HALF
Frida Maanum had an early opportunity, her shot taking a deflection before being caught by Faye Kirby's gloves. Beth Mead's inswinging free-kick also tested Kirby, who made a crucial save. Lotte Wubben-Moy's header from Mead's corner was central, not troubling the Liverpool goalkeeper.
Alessia Russo and Olivia Smith combined brilliantly, with Russo outpacing Gemma Evans and crossing for Smith. Mariona Caldentey flicked the ball on, and Kirby made a diving save to her bottom right. Mead's corner found Wubben-Moy, whose header was headed onto the far post.
The game's highlight came in the 16th minute when Smith showcased her dribbling skills, shrugging off three challenges to create space and smash the ball into the bottom left corner for 1-0.
Just before half-time, Russo's cross from the right almost caught Kirby out, but the goalkeeper managed to keep it out. However, Liverpool equalized soon after, with Beata Olsson finding the back of the net past debutant Anneke Borbe.
SECOND HALF
The second half saw us regain momentum, with Mariona finding Russo, who struck the ball wide. Hinds' cross for Russo was well-met, but Kirby's reaction save kept the score level.
With over half an hour remaining, we made a triple substitution, bringing on Katie McCabe, Caitlin Foord, and Blackstenius for Hinds, Maanum, and Mead. Smith continued to be our most threatening outlet, and her 66th-minute cross was cleared to Foord, whose attempt went over the crossbar.
Renée Slegers made a change, bringing on Kim Little, returning from injury, as Kyra Cooney-Cross made way.
Despite our efforts, Liverpool's defense remained strong. Blackstenius had a great chance to score, but Evans made a crucial block. However, in the 87th minute, Blackstenius controlled a ball over the top, turned, and smashed it into the top right corner for 2-1.
The game ended with seven minutes of added time, and Smith was substituted off to a standing ovation, replaced by Laia Codina. We held onto the lead, securing three vital points.
